Basilica of St. Mary Magdalene

We visited the Benedictine abbey church of Ste-Marie-Madeleine (or Basilica of St. Mary Magdalene) while we were in Vèzelay.  The official homepage is at http://www.basiliquedevezelay.org/

It is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site and many pilgrims stop here on their way to Santiago Compostela where the Spanish church has preserved in its crypt the tomb of the apostle James.

The basillica has a crypt underneath that houses the relics of Mary Magdalene.  It was said that a travelling monk brought them to Vèzelay.

Mel also got a rosary for her mother as a gift from the abbey and blessed it with the holy water.

We stayed at Centre Ste-Madeleine (phone: +33 (0)3 86 33 22 14) on rue St-Pierre.  The hostel has just been recently renovated and restored.  It still remains a basic 38-room hostel run by the Franciscan monks and nuns.  Check-in at 16:00 (4 PM) and is approximately €36 for a double occupancy room.  You are expected to tidy the room before check-out.  There is a wonderful kitchen and socializing lounge in the hostel where you may cook your meals and meet other pilgrims or visitors.
